Local Talent Isn’t Weak—Preparation Is
It’s unfair to the PBA to frame things as if players coming from our local leagues are weak—they are not. More often than not, they are victims of the system rather than reflections of a lack of talent.
Personally, I believe the national team should lean younger, prioritize shooting, and build a more mobile Gilas lineup. That said, fans who insinuate that PBA players are inferior are missing the bigger picture. These players simply need more time and exposure to learn the international style of play.
It is not their fault that they grew up within our local basketball culture. If they appear less effective internationally compared to how they perform in the PBA, the conversation should shift toward preparation, conditioning, system fit, and the level of competition they are facing—not blame the players themselves.
There are many young PBA players who are capable of contributing to Gilas. Unfortunately, politics and systemic limitations continue to hinder their opportunities. Until those issues are addressed, we will keep misplacing the blame instead of fixing the real problems.
