I had a chance to check out the Sunseeker booth to see what they were up to for next Spring, since for most of us in the Northern Hemisphere, the mowing season is just about over.
One of the new models that Sunseeker is showing off is the S7 LiDAR Ultra AWD 3000. Obviously, as the name suggests, this is a LiDAR option, which I’m a big fan of. But another feature is an arm that can extend to pick up small objects that might be in its way. Think of balls or other kids’ and dog toys that might be out in the yard.
Sounds pretty cool, right? Well, the issue here is something that robotic vacuums were dealing with about a year ago, when they added this feature. That is the speed. The robotic arm is very slow to come out to pick up the object and continue mowing the yard. Of course, if it’s cutting the grass, you’re not, so why does it matter how long it takes? The other aspect here is that it can only pick up small things. Maybe a branch fell off a tree from a recent storm… well, the S7 won’t be able to pick that up, unfortunately.
While others are focusing on edging and trimming, Sunseeker is focusing on objects
It’s an interesting move by Sunseeker. While other robotic lawn mowers, like those from MAMMOTION, Airseekers, and others, focus on edging and/or trimming, they can do 100% of the job of cutting your grass. Sunseeker is focusing on picking up debris and objects so it can continue cutting the grass.
Both areas definitely need attention, though I’d say that the edging and trimming is a more urgent feature addition than picking up objects.
Sunseeker has a whole lot of new robotic mowers that will likely launch early next year in the US and Canada.
