Marvel’s Stormbreakers transform iconic heroes with new Art Style Variant Covers
Marvel’s Stormbreakers are putting their own spin on centuries of artistic tradition this October with a new collection of Art Style Variant Covers.
The eight covers challenge Marvel’s current class of Stormbreakers to reinterpret heroes and villains through styles ranging from Art Deco and Art Nouveau to Ancient Greek vase painting, Expressionism, and Japanese Musha-e and Kabuki-e.
The results put a very different visual stamp on characters including Captain America, the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Punisher, Thor, Deadpool, and the X-Men.
The full lineup includes:
- Captain America #16 by Jonas Scharf, inspired by mid-century magazine art
- Fantastic Four #18 by Netho Diaz, inspired by Art Deco
- Iron Man #10 by Luciano Vecchio, inspired by Ancient Greek vase painting
- Punisher #9 by Geoff Shaw, inspired by Expressionism
- Thor #802 by Alessandro Cappuccio, inspired by crosshatching and etching
- Wade Wilson: Deadpool #9 by Gurihiru, inspired by children’s book illustrations
- X-Men #40 by Simone Di Meo, inspired by Art Nouveau
- X-Men United #8 by Juan Frigeri, inspired by Musha-e and Kabuki-e
The collection is designed to highlight the different influences and approaches of Marvel’s current Stormbreakers lineup, which consists of Cappuccio, Diaz, Di Meo, Frigeri, Gurihiru, Scharf, Shaw, and Vecchio.
Marvel launched the Stormbreakers program in 2020 as an evolution of its Young Guns initiative, spotlighting emerging artists the publisher sees as the next generation of major Marvel talent. Across Young Guns and Stormbreakers, Marvel has previously recognized artists including Steve McNiven, Jim Cheung, Sara Pichelli, and Ryan Stegman.
