Samsung phones have a feature available called Motion Photo, and with One UI 9.0 you can now reportedly use a motion photo as a background wallpaper for your device. Motion Photos are exactly what they sound like, which is a photo that moves slightly with motion animations added in by the software. Think of it like a GIF, only not a GIF.
Motion Photos can be accessed from the Samsung Gallery app on supported devices, but there won’t necessarily be any motion photos in there. You will need to have this feature enabled in the camera app for them to populate in the gallery. Just like with photo flash, the motion photos can be disabled, enabled, or set to an automatic mode which lets the software decide when the best time is to take them.
You can only use the motion photo as a wallpaper on the latest Samsung devices
As of right now, it’s only possible to use a motion photo as a wallpaper on the latest Samsung devices. This includes the Galaxy Z Flip 8, the Galaxy Z Fold 8, and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. All of these devices come out of the box running on Android 17 with One UI 9. The Galaxy S26 series also runs on One UI 9 now with the updates that have been pushed out, however, this feature capability doesn’t appear to be available on those older devices just yet.
According to SamMobile, the Galaxy S26 Ultra that it has in its possession does not have this feature. It’s worth noting that their device is running on the One UI 9 Beta 5. The Galaxy Z8 series is running on a stable version of One UI 9. SamMobile notes that this might be why its Galaxy S26 Ultra does not have the capability to set motion photos as wallpapers.
