The world of Exquisite Corpses is getting one more spinoff before season two, and this time, the Lone Gunman is stepping into the spotlight.
Image Comics and Tiny Onion have announced Exquisite Corpses: Lone Gunman, a five-issue miniseries from writer Pornsak Pichetshote and artist Alberto Ponticelli. The series launches this November and serves as the third and final spinoff spinning out of the first season of James Tynion IV and Michael Walsh’s horror series.
Pichetshote is no stranger to Exquisite Corpses, having been part of the original “Corpse Crew” of writers. For Lone Gunman, he’ll be joined by colorist Jordie Bellaire and letterer Becca Carey to explore the history of the golden mask, one of the 13 Families, and what happened to the survivors after the deadly events of season one.
And it sounds like surviving was only the beginning.
The story picks up two years later with Laura, Xavi, and Jason attempting to build new lives far away from the 13 Families. Laura may have survived the game as the Last Gunman, but the experience still hangs over all three of them. Now, the legacy of the golden mask is pulling them back into danger.
Pichetshote describes the series as something of a bridge between the two main Exquisite Corpses seasons.
“We’ve been referring to Exquisite Corpses: Lone Gunman as Season 1.5, bridging the gap between the first Exquisite Corpses season and the upcoming second,” Pichetshote said. “We follow my favorite killer and trace the history of the golden mask as well as one branch of the all-powerful 13 Families.”
That doesn’t mean you’ll need to have read all of season one to jump aboard. Pichetshote says the miniseries is also designed to stand on its own, using the aftermath of a slasher story as its starting point.
“We’ll be exploring one of my favorite horror subgenres: the ultimate ‘Final Girl’ story,” Pichetshote said. “What happens after you survive the twelve deadliest slashers of all time, and now are forced to uncover the secret history of the organization behind them and how they’ve shaped the course of America”
Pichetshote also teased some of the larger ideas driving the series, including lessons he’s bringing over from his current work on Absolute Green Arrow.
“It’s been fun to take the lessons I’ve learned on the Absolute Green Arrow series to tell a very different story about serial killers and billionaires, one that asks how the victims of their callous actions recover and retaliate.”
For Ponticelli, the opportunity also marks a reunion with Pichetshote after the two previously worked together on Unknown Soldier. His approach to the artwork sounds appropriately grimy for the world they’re stepping into.
“I’m working to give the story the right visual roughness, using textures and dirty marks,” Ponticelli said. “Doing this in collaboration with the Tiny Onion team is wonderful, they’re truly helpful, I’m learning a lot from them. I’m thrilled to be part of this team!”
The first issue will feature a main cover by Ponticelli and Bellaire, with variants from Rafael Albuquerque, Leandro Fernandez, Chris Brunner, Sebastian Fiumara, and Walsh. Walsh’s variant will come polybagged with a collectible trading card connected to Exquisite Corpses: The Game.
Lone Gunman follows Exquisite Corpses: Rascal Randy, which launched in July, and September’s Exquisite Corpses: Fox Mask Killer. All three spinoffs run five issues, with an Exquisite Corpses: Book of the Dead anthology also planned before season two.
The larger franchise isn’t slowing down, either. According to the announcement, Exquisite Corpses has sold more than 700,000 issues to date, while a feature film adaptation remains in development from Tiny Onion and Lyrical Media.
